JUST WHAT
IS A 'BOERBOEL'?
|
Originating in South Africa; the Boerboel is an
athletic, working dog breed of the mastiff type. The history of the
breed is diverse and complex, stemming from the 1600s and developed
by European pioneers. It is considered mainly to be a combination of
mastiff and bull-breeds; with other breeds introduced when considered
necessary to enhance the abilities of strength, watchfulness and protection.
An imposing breed; it is considered a superb farm dog,
excelling in property and personal protection and occasionally
used for hunting by the breed's supporters.
The breed has been described as manageable, reliable,
obedient and intelligent with strong protective instincts. The
Boerboel is self confident and fearless, and just as there is
diversity in the appearance of the Boerboel, there is also diversity
in temperament and drives of the Boerboel.
The Boerboel should instinctively stay close to the
owner and instinctively move between the owner and any perceived threat.
The ideal Boerboel should be gentle with children and
devoted to its master. There definitely are Boerboel with sharper
temperaments -- selected for due to the high crime rates in South
Africa -- and because of this; many members of the breed are not
suited to first time dog owners; or those that cannot be fair; but
FIRM. Proper socialization and responsible ownership is a must for
this large, powerful breed.
Boerboels are typically registered and regulated by a
few associations, namely the EBBASA,
SABT, USBA,
and the HBSA.
There is also an increase in world-wide popularity and there are many
Boerboels exported around the world to satisfy the need for a
versatile, athletic mastiff.
