CAVB ETHICS Pledge

as set forth in By-Laws

CAVBs Code of Ethics:

INTRODUCTION: The following is a general standard of behavior members are expected to follow and maintain.

Failure to adhere to these ethical guidelines may result in having to explain actions of a contravening nature to the board, and in subsequent removal of such individuals from the association.

BREEDING: When planning a mating between dog and bitch, serious consideration should be given to soundness, temperament, and type of both parents. Breeding inferior specimens of the breed is discouraged strongly.

    * No breeding is to be viewed as a source of financial gain alone.

    * The welfare and betterment of the breed takes first priority.

    * No bitch should be bred before the age of 18 months, or second heat, whichever is later, nor a first breeding done past the age of 5 years.

    * Brood bitches should be retired by their 8th year, and never bred more than once a year.

    * Over-breeding is strongly discouraged.

    * No more than every second heat is encouraged.

    * Before a breeding is planned, there should be proper facilities for the care and attention necessary for the health and well-being of the dam and the pups. Stud dog owners should be personally assured of such facilities before allowing their stud to mate a bitch.

    * Unsold pups from a litter must have the option of remaining in good conditions with the breeder as long as necessary to place them in suitable homes.

    * Sold pups must be re-homed by the breeder if necessary.  It is our aim that no pup bred by a member of this association ever go into a rescue or shelter program, but only to carefully selected and breed-educated homes.

    * Pups are to remain with the breeder until the age of 8 weeks minimum before sale, and then only be placed in carefully screened and selected homes of well-educated (in the breed) buyers.

    * Breeders should advise buyers of all characteristics of the breed, note in writing any deviation in the puppy from the accepted standard, and have a written contract before the sale, signed by both buyer and seller. Seller/breeder must remain on call for the buyer for a specified length of time should any questions regarding the breed or specific puppy arise.  (A minimum of 2 years is recommended, longer if possible).

    * Breeders should be aware of the circumstances of the pups they place, and be prepared to remove the pup from any inhospitable environment that poses a danger to the mental and physical development of a normal dog.

    * DNA identification is required of any stud used from outside your own kennel.

When a puppy is sold, new owners should be given a pedigree listing of at least 3 generations, diet sheet, and registration form.

HEALTH:

In regard to the incidence of hip dysplasia found in the breed, and its crippling nature and genetic factor, the CAVB recommendation is that all stock considered for breeding should be certified or rated before the breeding occurs by a reputable organization, such as OFA, Penn-Hip, OVC (Canada).

    * Only dogs whose results are in the passing ranges should be used in producing offspring.  Stud dogs and brood bitches who consistently produce bad hip results or genetic problems in their offspring should be removed permanently from the breeding program, and their offspring not used for further breeding. Dogs rated as "borderline" on hips can be bred "up" to another dog with a Good or Excellent rating.

    * Progeny should be monitored as to subsequent health and individual fitness to be bred in turn. Any members who produce puppies displaying genetic faults that inhibit the dog's movement or affect its quality of life should advise the Secretary so a record can be kept and monitored. Such puppies should not be used in the breeding program.

    * A complete vaccination and worming form should be supplied with each puppy to the new buyer, with recommendations from the breeder about which shots and vaccines should be used with this breed, and complications that may arise if inoculations are not given according to instructions from the breeder.  Also, instructions concerning the relatively safe administration of anesthesia should be provided, in case a situation arises where anesthesia is necessary, such as spay/neuter.

MISCELLANEOUS:

    * No puppy should be imported/exported before the age of 8 weeks.  Anti-cruelty laws in countries where the pups may be exported to should be firmly enforced.

    * No South African Boerboel should ever be sold to a laboratory, pet-shop, puppy-mill, or broker/dealer, nor to anyone associated with any of the above.  Suspension and banning if the result, whether knowing or unknowing.

    * Frequent updates on puppies sold should be received from buyers on a regular basis.  The association highly recommends a suitable evaluation of any buyer before selling the pup to him/her.

    * Micro-chipping or tatooing of each pup in the litter is recommended.

    * Unsportsmanlike behavior at any organized public event will be construed as an infraction of the Code of Ethics of this association.  Such behavior in a public domain is a negative reflection upon the association, and members who participate in such will be asked to explain their actions pending a association decision of removal/non-removal from the organization.

    * Members of CAVB are expected to be positively involved in the association, and not give it a bad name, in public or private. Flaming will not be tolerated.

    * Members are expected to put the welfare of the breed ahead of any personal gain or ambition, and strive to work together amicably to further the breed in this country.
