BOERBOEL FARM DOG TEST I

Allowed equipment is: flat collar; leather or nylon, choker collar - leather or chain on dead-ring, prong collar - on dead ring as per judge's inspection. Leash to be leather or nylon up to 2 ft. in length.

BFD LEVEL 1 - ©

1. Heeling On-lead - At specified starting point, both handler and dog proceed in a HEEL formation 20 paces straight ahead.

 

2. Down In Motion with Recall - At the 20 pace marker handler (while in motion) gives the DOWN command (once only) and proceeds to walk another 25 paces straight ahead, handler then turns on the spot and gives command for RECALL (once only). Dog recalls to handler in a front finish position and with one (only) further command returns to left HEEL position of handler.

 

3. Sit In Motion with Recall - Handler and dog then proceed to walk another 25 paces on lead back in the direction they have just come from to a designated marker where handler will instruct the dog to perform a SIT IN MOTION. Handler turns right and walks 15 paces and RECALLS the dog to a front finish again. With one (only) further command returns to left HEEL position of handler.

 

4. Down Stay Near Fire - Handler and dog team then continue on for 10 paces to the fire barrel(ring) area (4 feet away from the fire), where indicated by marker, handler will instruct the dog to DOWN STAY, leaving dog (off lead or end of leash) for a 2 minute count. 

 

5. Down Stay with Gunshot - Handler returns to heel position and handler and dog will turn left and proceed at a slow pace for 25 paces to a designated spot where handler will give the dog a down stay command while on lead and in control of dog handler at heel position. Starter pistol will be fired 2 times at a distance of 100 feet away.

 

6. Heel at Trot Past Distraction - Handler and dog will then turn left and proceed quickly at a TROT passing by another team of handler and dog without any aggression shown to designated “starting” position.

 

7. Down Stay Near Livestock - Handler and dog will make their way from that point in a formal heel to the farm animal (horse/goat) and using a buffer zone of 7 feet distance (as indicated by markers) around the animal, the dog/handler team will proceed to walk a complete square around the animal while under complete control at all times, and under judges instruction handler will give the dog the DOWN command and STAY command on lead for a period of 1 minute at 2 different corners.

 

8. Directed Jump to Truck Bed - When finished and when indicated by the judge, handler and dog team will then proceed to the bed of the pickup area where the handler will give the command only once to “UP” into the bed of the truck with the tail gate down, have the dog stay there for 30 seconds then back down to handlers side in a proper heel formation.

 

9. Recall Over Obstacle - Handler and dog team will then proceed to the hay bale portion of the test, in which the dog is given a SIT-STAY command and the handler makes their way through/around the hay bales and RECALLS the dog (one command) to front finish.

 

 

All of these sections will be scored as PASS/FAIL. 

Dog/Handler team will need to pass with an 77 % . (Dog/handler team needs to pass 7 out of 9 sections.)

The bitch or dog needs to be 12 mos. old.

 

REASONS FOR FAILURE - ©

 

1. Heeling On-lead - Extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade.

 

2. Down In Motion with Recall - More than one DOWN command, more than one RECALL command, dog leaving the down position or on recall going away from handler constitutes a fail grade.

 

3. Sit In Motion with Recall - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one SIT command, more than one RECALL command, dog leaving the sit position or on recall going away from handler constitutes a fail grade.

 

4. Down Stay Near Fire - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one DOWN command, dog leaving the down position or any appearance of FEAR (whining, barking or trying to avoid the fire) constitutes a fail grade.

 

5. Down Stay with Gunshot - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one DOWN command, dog leaving the down position or any appearance of FEAR (whining, panicky behaviour) constitutes a fail grade. DOGS NOT TO BE PENALIZED FOR FORWARD/INTERESTED DEMEANOUR TOWARDS SOUND OF GUNSHOT.

 

 6. Heel at Trot Past Distraction - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. Any appearance of aggression (lunging/growling/barking) towards the other dog/handler team constitutes a fail grade.

 

7. Down Stay Near Livestock - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one DOWN command, dog leaving the down position or any appearance of FEAR (whining, panicky behaviour) constitutes a fail grade. DOGS NOT TO BE PENALIZED FOR FORWARD/INTERESTED (CONTROLLED) DEMEANOUR TOWARDS LIVESTOCK.

 

8. Directed Jump to Truck Bed - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one UP command, or non-completion of task will constitute a fail grade.

 

9. Recall Over Obstacle - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one SIT-STAY command, more than one RECALL command, or non-completion of task will constitute a fail grade.

BFD LEVEL 2 - ©

Allowed equipment is: flat collar; leather or nylon. Leash for on-lead portions to be 4 - 6 ft. in length.

 

1. Heeling Off-lead - At specified starting point, both handler and dog proceed in a HEEL formation 50 paces straight ahead.

 

2. Sit In Motion with Recall - At the 50 pace marker; handler (while in motion) gives the SIT command (once only) and proceeds to walk another 25 paces straight ahead, handler then turns on the spot and gives command for RECALL (once only). Dog recalls to handler in a front finish position and with one (only) further command returns to left HEEL position of handler.

 

3. Down In Motion with Recall - Handler and dog then proceed to walk another 50 paces off lead, in a quick trot back in the direction they have just come from to a designated marker where handler will instruct the dog and perform a DOWN IN MOTION. Handler turns right and walks 30 paces and RECALLS the dog to a front finish again. With one (only) further command returns to left HEEL position of handler.

 

4. Down Stay Near Fire - Handler and dog team then continue on for 30 paces to the fire barrel(ring) area (4 feet away from the fire), where indicated by marker, handler will instruct the dog to DOWN STAY, handler takes 10 paces to the side of the dog; leaving dog for a 2 minute count. Handler will then return to heel position continue.

 

5. Down Stay with Gunshot - Handler and dog will turn left and proceed at a slow pace for 25 paces to a designated spot where handler will give the dog a DOWN STAY command and handler will walk 10 paces to the side of the dog. Shooter will be hidden from view (50 feet away) and will fire starter pistol 2 times. Handler returns to heel position.

 

6. Heel Through Gate- Handler and dog will proceed through a “gated entrance” off lead while handler’s hands are occupied carrying haybale/40lb bag of kibble or hamburger and beer. Dog is to be obedient to handler’s verbal commands only and enter through the gated entrance immediately following the handler.

 

7. Alert and Defend- Handler and dog team will proceed through a different area ON LEAD where 2 staged “bad guys” will be sneaking around the area. Dog is to alert and defend when handler is “threatened”.

 

8. Heel Beside Vehicle - Handler will be riding either a bicycle or an ATV (supplied by dog handler) on a 5 km route (2.5 km out with a 10 minute break and confirmation of dog's health/wellness and 2.5 km back) with dog on leash in a heel command at the handler’s side without lagging behind or forging ahead.

 

9. Directed Jump to Truck Bed - Handler and dog in a heel formation will approach the pick up truck and stop at the designated position of 10 feet away. With one command, handler will send the dog into the back of the pick up truck and command SIT , then wait until judge gives the time command of 2 minutes and then retrieve the dog.

 

10. High Jump- Handler and dog team will then proceed to the hay bale portion of the test, in which the dog is given a command to UP and jump onto the flat presented side of two large round bales; one after the other.

 

All of these sections will be scored as PASS/FAIL. 

Dog/Handler team will need to pass with an 80 % . (Dog/handler team needs to pass 8 out of 10 sections.)

The dog needs to be 18 months or older to participate for bitches; 24 mos. for dogs. Younger dogs will be considered on a case by case basis.

Neither unwarranted aggression, nor fear shall be allowed during any of these exercises and will result in an immediate disqualification.

Pre-requisite to this test will be the BFD 1

7. Alert and Defend- Failure to alert or behave in a forward confident manner will constitute a fail grade. 

 

8. Heel Beside Vehicle - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by crossing vehicle path or jumping up on handler constitutes a fail grade.

 

9. Directed Jump to Truck Bed - While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one UP command, or non-completion of task will constitute a fail grade.

 

10. High Jump- While heeling; extreme lagging or forging (2 dog lengths in front or behind) or direct interference by jumping or tripping of handler constitutes a fail grade. More than one UP command, or non-completion of task will constitute a fail grade.
